CSX's roots date back to the early nineteenth century beginning on July 4, 1828, when construction began on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. America's first common carrier railroad, the B&O played a vital role in the growth and development of the mid-Atlantic region, and paved the way for other regional railroads to follow.
