The Hawkshaw community was located on the site of the power company building. During preliminary site work for Gulf Power's corporate offices, archaeologists discovered artifacts from a prehistoric occupation of over 2000 years ago. Known as the Deptford Culture, these people were located near a saltmarsh and thrived on shellfish, wild game, nuts and berries from the area.
