The river forms part of the boundary between Alabama and Florida along nearly its entire length and drains into the Gulf of Mexico.
The Riverwalk was constructed by Escambia County. A well-kept nature trail passes through the park's characteristic habitats along the river's rich floodplain and soggy bottomlands. The buttressed bases of bald cypress line the swampy edges. A laybrinth of tannin-stained water stretches across the floodplain.
