Johnson Beach is protected by the National Park Service and is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The beach dune habitat of Perdido Key is characterized by several rows of wind built sand dunes. The island is no more than 100 feet wide in most places. The dunes are vegetated with grasses including sea oats, bunch grass, and beach grass. Access to the dunes is available at crossover.
