Pensacola: Seville Historic District: 433 East Zaragoza StreetLocated on Zaragoza Street across from Jamie’s restaurant, the Moore home is a landmark of graceful Victorian style as well as an excellent example of period renovation. The vernacular of the wooden creole cottage is preserved with deep roof overhangs, ample windows, and broad porches designed for ventilation and shade in our hot climate. The “before” photograph show that there was a building attached to the west side. This was typical of the deterioration of the original housing stock in the historic district in the 20th century. Not until the 1980’s did the homes on the National Register begin to be renovated for private use. Much of the home has been restored to a close facsimile to the style of the period. There are downstairs door from the San Carlos Hotel. Beautiful period antiques compliment the renovation. A patio and carriage house extend the living space. This is one of the finest examples of a restoration in the historic district.

There is an auxillary building in the back yard which is used as a guest house. The origins of the guest cottage are unknown. It is assumed that the structure was added at the same time as the rear addition and is probably another house which was moved to the site. taken by Denise Daughtry
From the vantage point of the back yard, the second floor widows walk can be seen in the upper right corner of the photograph. The back roof of the addition retains the classic pyramidal shape of the four-square Georgian style. taken by Denise Daughtry

The arrangement of the foyer and hall are not traditional to the four-square architectural style. Most of the hall was eliminated and a staircase added for access to the upperstairs bedroom. Behind the staircase there was room to add a large closet and bath. taken by Denise Daughtry
The Renaissance Revival painting was done by Larry Grossman. The antique buffet was a gift from Nancy Trawick grandmother. taken by Denise Daughtry
On the wall and throughout the house there are dozens of mirrors which acts to reflect light. taken by Denise Daughtry
The fireplace on the right was positioned int he center of both front rooms before the walls were removed. These heated the entire house before the advent of modern heating systems. taken by Denise Daughtry

Walls are heart-pine throughout the house. Nancy stripped the walls by sanding them down to the bare wood over a three month period. taken by Denise Daughtry

The fireplaces were exposed when the dry wall was removed. Nancy discovered this double-flue fireplace when she was knocking out walls to create a door between rooms. This would have been two rooms with a separate fireplace serving each. There are gas logs installed in the house fireplaces. taken by Denise Daughtry
The amoire functions as a closet. Homes of this period had no closets. Nancy has added hanging space in a closet behind the central staircase. taken by Denise Daughtry
The bay window of leaded glass with stained panes is very unusual. It imparts a light airy feeling to the room. taken by Denise Daughtry
The 1920's armoiree functions as a bathroom cabinet. taken by Denise Daughtry
Toilets moved into the house when interior bathrooms became available in the 1920's and 1930's. The main sewer system in Pensacola was installed by Federal Government workers during the Depression. The first line was dug in the middle of Garden Street. taken by Denise Daughtry
