Pensacola: Historic Pensacola Village: Walton CottageThe Walton House is said to have been the last home of Dorothy Walton, widow of George Walton, one of Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence. Dorothy followed her son, George Jr., to Florida when he was appointed secretary of the Territory of Florida udner Andrew Jackson in 1821. When General Lafayette made his last tour of the United States, he wanted to see the widow of his old friend, George Walton. Since Dorothy was too infirm to travel to Mobile to meet the General, she sent her granddaughter, Octavia, who spoke fluent Frnech. Octavia told Lafayette about her house, her pet birds and her French and Spanish playmates in Pensacola. Dorothy live in this house from 1825 until her death in 1832. She is buried in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
