Pensacola: Historic Pensacola Village: The Barkley House

The Barkley House is located at 410 South Florida Blanca Street. Built after George Barkley purchased the land in 1825, this is one of the oldest masonry residences in Florida. Barkley, a prosperous merchant of British extraction, built the house for his wife, Clara Louise Garnier of New Orleans. George and Clara raised nine children here. Often called a "high house" because of its elevated first floor, the home's construction resembles that of the early masonry homes of New Orleans and Louisiana. The Barkley House is part of the properties owned by the State of Florida and administered by the West Florida Preservation Board.
