Milton: Historic District: Imogene Theatre

Designed by architect Walker Willis in the Renaissance Revival style, the Milton Opera House was built in 1912. The walls are four bricks thick and the floors are steel reinforced concrete. It is the only three story building in Milton, the theatre on the second floor having a tiered balcony on three sides. The theater was named the "Imogene Theatre" after seven year old Imogene Gooch by her parents when they bought the building in 1921. The downstairs originally housed the post office and a retail store. It had been abandoned for over forty years when the Historical Society restored it, and made it their headquarters. A musuem of local history now occupies the downstairs. (Source: Green, Laurie. “Images of America: Santa Rosa County.” ISBN 0-7524-0875-5.)
