Gulf Islands National Seashore: Dunes Nature TrailDunes face the sea. They break waves and winds to shelter the rest of the island. The island shelters the harbor and the mainland. Sea oats and other grasses catch the sand and hood it against the wind. They tolerate salt spray and drifting sand.
