These small shotgun houses are abandoned. They were mill houses for workers in the early 20th century. The mill provided the jobs, the stores, schools, housing and services for the workers. Mill laborers housing was assigned according to position at the mill. Black workers were segregated in the "Quarters" and lived in shotgun houses.

The shotgun Victorian cottage is a typical architectural style. It's decline is slowed because the house was built with heart-pine lumber which is impervious to termites. -
The shotgun style was typical living quarters for mill workers and are often called mill houses.
